MELAKA:

To be ready for any disaster during Visit Melaka Year 2024, a practice simulation simulating a tourist boat accident was staged.

According to Datuk Murad Husin, chief executive officer of Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM), the drill was designed to test how well-prepared the organization's emergency response team was to handle difficulties that can arise following a boat accident.

After seeing the practice held by PPSPM and Putra Specialist Hospital yesterday, he said, "We have a specialized rescue squad where nine of its members have worldwide certifications in life-saving techniques.

He added that the rescue squad would concentrate on people who were walking along the river's bank when they fell in.

"Earlier this year, a crippled guy drowned in the river in one instance.

Because of this, Murad said, "Even though such cases are uncommon, it's a crucial component of emergency response readiness to cover those falling into the river."

According to him, the exercise will improve the collaboration between different rescue organizations in terms of getting individuals out of the water swiftly.

The simulation involved a total of 43 rescue workers from several departments, including Hospital Melaka.

Rescuers were taught ways for rescuing injured tourists stuck on a boat as part of their training, among other things.
