The potential for medical tourism as a sector with economic benefits exists in Brunei Darussalam.

In response to a recommendation by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Rahman Ibrahim to promote and expand Brunei as a medical tourism destination at the LegCo session on March 14, Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr. Mohd. Isham Jaafar made this statement.

The minister claimed that foreign patients could be attracted by international accreditation, such as Gleneagles JPMC's Joint Commission International (JCI), which is regarded as the gold standard for healthcare organizations maintaining a high level of patient care and safety.

One of the long-standing cardiac centers in the area, Gleneagles JPMC provides first-rate services and facilities on par with those of other illustrious institutes.

Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) will be one of the few medical facilities in the area offering various medical services, such as the soon-to-be-implemented organ transplant medical procedures, thanks to partnerships with other foreign universities.

The minister also discussed the possibilities of specialized facilities including the Brunei Cancer Centre, Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Center, and the Maxillofacial, Face Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Centre (MFPRSC) at Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC).

JPMC and PJSC are now developing a plan to advertise their medical services worldwide as well as to identify and research the market to develop a competitive ecosystem for medical tourism in the nation.
